4 Days of thrills on the garden route
JACQ’S 40TH ROAD TRIP
We’ve put together a road trip that even the most avid of local adventurers would appreciate. From zip lining through the Elgin Valley, brewery tastings, Karoo lamb on the braai and the celebration of the what has been described as the “best adventure in South Africa” these 4 days are sure to bring a group of mates closer together. A combination of honest but memorable accommodation, massive mountain passes and local field experts complete the experience.
Duration of Tour: 4 Days, 3 Nights
Here’s what you can look forward to over 4 incredible days:
Day 1 - The Cape Canopy Tour, A Beer (or some) and a Braai for the boys
Coffee and breakfast stop at the No.1 Farm Stall in South Africa. A host of delicacies and refreshments are available and created from strictly local produce.
We then team up with the guys from Cape Canopy Tours. You’ll get to explore 11 zip lines across 13 different platforms in the company of soaring eagles, surrounded by breath-taking Cape fynbos panoramas and mountainscapes. (A 4.5 hrs experience inclusive of a light lunch starting at 09h00)
Our journey then takes us to the start of the Klein Karoo. Tucked away in the mountain range 20km before the town of Robertson lies the Saggy Stone Mountain Brewery. Pioneers of the craft beer scene in this region and well-known for the daring and brave take on the beer making process, a tasting tray of 5 beers is a must (possibly a few more). Snacks on the menu is perfectly suited to the garden like setting of the brew-house restaurant.
After sharing our experiences of the zip-lining experiences and delighting in a few brews we’ll head to our accommodation for the evening which will be at the ever-impressive Africamps set up at the Pat Bush Mountain Reserve where we’ll be able to cool off in the pool and enjoy a braai with unsurpassed mountain view (A personal favourite destination)
Day 2 - Rowing and Walking the heart of the Garden Route
After a busy first day our morning will start with a few energy foods! (fruits, juices, breads, yoghurst, muffins etc) before we head to Wilderness area of the Garden Route (3.5 HR Drive). Our first water based experience happens at the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp on the Wilderness lagoon. The Half Collar Kingfisher Trail is a real gem of the region. We’'ll board canoes and head up the Touws river to a point where river becomes a narrow, shallow stream. The water is crystal clear and the trees add to the general feeling of tranquility. Leave your canoe on the banks of the river and follow the path to the boardwalk on a hike that culminates in a water-fall, picnic spots and view points are a plenty. (A 3-4 HRS experience)
After a quick stop for a shop and to stock up on the beers we’ll make our way to the newly launched Rushmere Guest Farm where our friends from Africa Complete have set up an authentic countryside cottage stay offer. Nestled into the hillside on an historic export nut farm 3km off the N2 highway between Knysna and Sedgefield. We’ll braai (again of course) down at the jetty on the lake as we cap off another enjoyable day! The farm also has a number of walking trails, a cosy bar set-up and a pool at the main farmhouse. (Location for the next 2 nights)
Day 3 - The #REVELINIT Moment
After another energy packed breakfast we’ll head for the main event. After a 90 minutue drive we’ll team up with our friends from Untouched Adventures. As described by them: “Known as The Most Beautiful Adventure In South Africa, the 2-3 hour Storms River Kayak & Lilo adventure, is our most popular adventure activity. It is enjoyed all year round and everyone, young and old, can experience the best that the Tsitsikamma National Park has to offer. Explore deep into the Storms River Gorge and enjoy the long, deep, quiet pools with deep caves and ancient indigenous forests that the Garden Route is famous for.” After all the tranquillity, we have to keep the balance and add a healthy dose of adrenaline! On the trip back, you will be given the exhilarating opportunity to leap off the overhanging cliff walls of the gorge into deep pools. This offers not only a good test of your bravery but also some good occasions for laughter (or nervous giggling), friendly encouragement (or daring) and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.
Lunch is then enjoyed on the ocean front at a restaurant based inside the park with an unrivaled ocean view.
We'll then give the boys the afternoon off, we are on the Garden Route after all and surrounded by a host of activities or relaxation spots. A visit to the first ever craft brewery in South Africa (Mitchells) wont a go a miss we are sure of this!
We’ll then make our way back to the Rushmere Guest Farm for a swim in the lake and the final braai feast of the tour.
Day 4 - A quick race through the forest before we head home!
After a 9am checkout we’ll head back towards Wilderness for our final thrill. The experience experts from Wild X Adventures guide us on an 11KM Quad-Biking ride through the forest trails of the Wilderness National Park. Different trails are available for different skill levels and the bikes are fully automatic and a breeze to ride. (A 1 HR Experience)
We start the journey back toward Cape Town at this point. Where the boys will be able to decide where we have lunch along the N2 with loads of options we’ll share one final beer together and revel in the memories made!
