EXPERIENCE THE ELGIN WINE VALLEY
Nestled away at the foothills of the Khoikhoi Mountain Range and only 1 hour from Cape Town you’ll find the ever charming Elgin Cool Climate Wine Region. Visitors will find an abundance of award-wining wines with distinctive minerality, crisp acidity and freshness. Elgin’s earthy, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Syrah wines, with excellent ageing potential, are also grabbing accolades and wine lovers’ attention. Additionally, Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and small experimental quantities of Grenache Noir are grown here. This is a day of pure joy in what we believe is one of the best kept secrets of the South African wine landscape.

the local’s first love

Our first stop is SA’s most loved farmstall for a quick breakfast stop (locals love a good farm stall). Established in the sixties, Peregrine has been serving generations of travelers seeking honest homemade fare and warm country hospitality. Situated in the beautiful and fertile Elgin Valley, Peregrine offers an abundance of locally sourced artisanal goods and wholesome, responsibly farmed, fresh produce. Peregrine was made famous by it’s Venison (springbok) Pie. This is a must when visiting.

ALmenkerk wine estate

A small family owned estate in the northern part of the valley sets the scene for our first tasting, **Almenkerk Wines.** As they proudly explain in their mission statement; “our goal is to have loads of fun making wine while not comprising on quality and intrigue”. A member of the founding family will take you through some of their best wines which are most represented by their ‘Masters Series’. The tone for the day will be one of wine themed storytelling and nobody does this better than the team at Almenkerk.

IONA PHENOMENON

Next up we arrive at the highest altitude vineyards in the valley. **Iona wines** are somewhat iconic in the industry of cool-climate wines. Situated at the top of the valley up a windy and scenic dirt road winemaker Werner Muller considers himself as the custodian of some of the most ‘ naturally loved by nature’ fruit in South Africa. A comprehensive range of cultivars exist here with the focus on only using site specific grapes. The Monopole and Single Vineyards ranges are what made them most famous but be sure try the Solace and One Man Band reds too! A quaint and cozy tasting room set inside an old cape Dutch structure.

Our lunch stop is simple, seasonal and ‘of the land’ and nobody embodies that better than **Stacey Lee Chan at the Paul Cluver Restaurant.** This is a true celebration of local in every sense. Growing the freshest produce in their own garden and sourcing the best ingredients from their neighbors in the Elgin Valley. After lunch we’ll take a stroll across the welcoming lawns of the **Cluver estate** to their tasting room tucked away under a collection of weeping oak trees. The Cluver family famously pioneered wine in the region transforming the potential of the terroir from apples and peaches to a vino bearing wonderland. Seems fitting that we end at the start so to speak. Spanning across 4 different ranges there are a number of different tasting options here. A joyful journey of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is what we suggest as they expertly produce 3 of each.
